Black Alumni Council - History

Foundation of BAC

Founded in May 1983 the Washington University Black Alumni Council (BAC) began with the tenth year reunion of the Class of 1973. It was Alex Carroll who, in early 1983, initiated the reunion in honor of the avowed largest Black graduating class. Campus administrator Cynthia L. Cosby, and others, worked with Alex, an out-of-state resident at the time, in sponsoring the first Black alumni reunion. Discussion of formulating an alumni association of particular interests arose among the participating classmates. A steering committee comprising alumni volunteers was charged with laying the foundation of what was to become the Washington University Black Alumni Council.

There are 3,000 Washington University African-American alumni worldwide. The Black Alumni Council has active councils in St. Louis, Missouri, Houston, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. While chapters are not in all of the contiguous United States, African American alumni throughout the nation participate in such BAC activities as college fairs and other recruitment activities, as well as special events within their respective states.

The Black Alumni Council began fund-raising activities in February 1989 with its first scholarship dinner-dance. Since that time and with other annual scholarship benefits, many African American students attending Washington University have benefitted from these scholarship resources. The BAC established its first scholarship endowment in February 1993 with a $50,000 gift to Washington University. Through the generosity and untiring support of many alumni and friends, the Black Alumni Council Scholarship Endowment has reached $100,000 in addition to other Black Alumni Council scholarship funds.
